How to setup private nameservers?

If you have a reseller hosting package with Provider.lk, you can setup private/custom nameservers (Eg.: ns1.yourdomain.com, ns2.yourdomain.com) for your own domain name to provide your clients with.

You have to follow the below 3 step process to create private nameservers.

STEP 1 - Register child nameserver records

  • Locate your account information email and make sure you have the nameserver IPs provided in that email.
  • If you have registered your domain name with us,
    1. Please access secure.provider.lk and click "Domains" > Select the domain name from the "My Domains"
    2. Then the domain management portal will appear, you have to select "Private Nameservers" option shown under "Manage" from the left side menu
    3. Then you can register your private nameservers; Choose the prefix first (Eg. dns1, ns1, etc.) and enter it under "Nameserver" field, then enter the respective nameserver IP address from the account information email, and "Save Changes".
  • If you have not registered your domain name with us, you will have to follow a somewhat similar process as mentioned above from your existing registration provider's management panel. Sometimes child nameservers are shown as "Host records", "Glue records", "Child nameserver records" as well. If you cannot locate these options, please consult your provider.

STEP 2 - Configure A records

  • You have to configure two A records for the nameserver IPs and the prefixes configured in the previous step. To do this,
    1. Access your hosting control panel and navigate to DNS/Zone management section.
    2. Then add two "A" records for first and second nameservers (Eg. ns.yourdomain.com, ns2.yourdomain.com) and enter the respective nameserver IPs the same way as you added under the STEP-1.

STEP 3 - Set nameservers from your WHM (only applicable to cPanel resellers)

  • The last step is to access your Web Host Manager (WHM) account and navigate to "Basic WebHost Manager Setup" from the left side menu.
  • From there, you can set the nameservers that you have configured (ns1.yourdomain.com, ns2.yourdomain.com) and save the changes.
